Three Reasons to Stain Your Deck

2

I think we can all agree that we’d much rather be BBQing on our decks than staining or sealing them. But taking a weekend at the very beginning of the warm season can save a lot of headache down the road. If you need convincing to throw even more items on your to-do list, I have three reasons deck treatment should be added:

1) Pre-emptive Care or “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
One of the first steps to finishing a deck is to go over the whole surface and look for loose screws and rotted boards and replace them. This keeps moisture from getting into and between boards. It’s also a good time to walk around and check the posts, joists, mounts, and brackets for structural integrity. No one wants to be “that” family riding the collapsing deck on America’s Funniest Home Videos.

2) Weather and Sun Will Damage Untreated Wood
Moisture can lead to mildew and rot during the spring/summer months and in areas with rough winters where moisture can freeze and cause even more damage.  The Sun in some areas can age a wood deck in a single season. Then you are left with a greyed dingy looking surface. Pretty soon the neighbor kids are telling stories about your house being haunted and your friends don’t want to come over for burgers and dogs. If people are turning down free food you know its gotten pretty bad.

3) Refinishing Your Deck Can Add to Your Homes’ Value and Curb Appeal
At least for the foreseeable future we are in a buyer’s market. If you are trying to sell your home you know the importance of getting the potential buyer to picture him or herself living their lives in the home. The backyard space is just as important as the inside for this, and the deck is a paramount part of the landscape.

A Primer on Deck Treatment

Take a trip through your local hardware or paint store and you might be taken back by the wide variety of deck treating products on the market. What’s the difference between stain and a sealer? How do you know which product is right for your deck? This primer attempts to answer those questions, so let’s start at the biggest decision you’ll have in the deck treatment isle: “Do I seal or stain?” This choice is up to your preference, but they each have their own benefits and drawbacks.
